Extra foliumzuur moet via voeding worden verkregen. Foliumzuur kan helpen bij het voorkomen van neurale buisdefecten zoals spina bifida. Indien nodig kan een arts foliumzuur met een hogere sterkte voorschrijven. Zwangere vrouwen dienen voedingsmiddelen die rijk zijn aan ijzer te eten, samen met voedingsmiddelen die veel vitamine C bevatten, omdat dit de opname van ijzer bevordert.
